LOCATION: Bexar, Wilson, Karnes and Goliad Counties, Texas
This plan encompasses a four-county study area in which the San Antonio River is located. It assesses existing nature-based recreational resources and addresses deficits in regional recreational facilities in the area. Phase I of this plan identifies opportunities for regional nature-based facilities and trails, based on the natural, cultural, and historical resources in the area, and suggests strategies for creating a system wide approach to parks planning and implementation through the use of joint-use and interagency agreements. Phase II assesses parks and recreational needs at the local level for each of the four counties, made up predominately of rural communities of 2,000 people or fewer. This phase also includes a hands-on implementation process for use by each of the government agencies in the study area. This document may be utilized by municipalities within the counties to aid in securing state grant funds for parks and recreational facilities. The project won a 2006 American Society of Landscape Architects Texas Chapter Merit Award and 2008 Excellence in Planning Award from the Texas Recreation and Park Society.
